We should embrace “biased” media

TV Stations like Fox used to get me all wound up with their interpretation of the news. I, like many others, detected a bias and disagreed with the direction they are leaning in. But why do we put such standards on journalism? Sure, we want to receive accurate news, but why do we insist upon unbiased news so long as the information we are getting is factually correct?

People need to stop thinking that their news sources are unbiased and praise the fact that journalists occasionally have an opinion. Journalists could likewise do well to stop pretending that they don’t have an opinion. We digest “news” because we wan to know more about specific issues and topics. There is an inherent implication that the journalist has more complete or current information– else we wouldn’t likely be digesting. Since they are the one with the first-hand research, why not let them express their opinion?

Our expectations on journalists are nearly to our expectations of gays in the military… “don’t ask don’t tell”. Yeah, and we know how well that policy works.

I think it is about time that we recognized journalists have an opinion. So long as you the reader can detect that opinion then the only “harm” is if you disagree with the opinion.
